Nabarun Bhattacharya was born on June 23, 1948 in West Bengal, India. His father was an eminent playwright Bijan Bhattacharya and mother was a great writer, Mahashweta Devi. Being in the family of writers, actors and artists, his interest in literature started very young. He quit his career of journalism to become a full- time writer. His writings often fall into the tradition of magic realism where the readers find a strange but soothing amalgamation of reality and magic. Some of his major works include ‘Kangal Malshat’, ‘Herbert’, ‘Lubdhak’, ‘Fyaturur Kumbhipak’, ‘Joratali’, ‘Raater Circus’, etc. He was awarded with the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel, ‘Herbert’ that was later adapted into film by Suman Mukhopadhyay. He died on July 31, 2014 by intestinal cancer.
