One of the greatest Bengali folklorists, Dinesh Chandra Sen was born on November 3, 1866. His fascination for the folk literature led him to research more only to come up with some masterpieces. His first book ‘Kumar Bhupendrasingha’ is a narrative poem published in 1890. Another book ‘Bangla Bhasha O Sahitya’ illustrates a systematic development of Bengali literature. His other famous works include ‘Tin Bandhu’, ‘Behula’, ‘Sati’, ‘Nilmanik’, ‘Ramayani Kotha’, ‘Sukatha’, ‘Mukto Churi’, etc. One of the notable aspects of Sen’s writings is that they are not only limited to the Bengali folklore but also capture the Hindu mythologies like Puranas. He was honored with the title of ‘Raibahadur’ by the government of India in 1921 for his contribution to the Bengali literature and research. He passed away on November 20, 1939 in Kolkata.
