গোলাম মুরশিদ



Ghulam Murshid is a renowned author and researcher from Bangladesh, who contributed for in-depth analysis of the rich history of Bengali society, culture and literature. He was born in 1940 in Barishal District of undivided Bengal. After completing M.A. in Bengali language and literature from Dhaka University, he did his doctoral research on Hindu Social Reformation moments of 19th Century. Following this, he started teaching at Rajsahi University and continued for two decades. From 1984, he has taken residence in London.

Although he served as academic teacher and radio-journalist, his life-long focus has been scholarly research on topics ranging from the historical perspective of Bengal society, as well as its evolving features through cultural renaissance and independence. The very first of his works “Vaishnab Padaboli Probeshak” was published in 1968. His lectures on Rabindranath Tagore, given at Calcutta University were compiled and published as the book entitled “Rabindra-biswe Purba-Banga, Purba- Bange Rabindra Charcha” in 1981. His second book based on the PhD work was published under the name “Sanaskar Andolon o Bangla Natok”. Two others of his books, namely “Sankocher Biwhalata” (1985) and “Rassundari theke Rokeya:Nari Progotir Eksho Bochor” (1993) authentically documented the modernization of Bengali women. Again, his books like “Bangla Mudron o Prokashonar Adi-Porbo” (1984), “Kalantore Bangla Godyo” (1993)and “Hazar bochorer bangali Sanskriti” (2006) depicted the cultural and linguistic evolution of Bengali language and literature. Finally, his biographical work on Michael Madhusudan Dutta, named “Ashar Cholone Bhuli” (1995) is considered as one of the monumental works in Bengali Biographical literature. Others of his notable literary works include “Jakhan Palatak: Mukti juddher dinguli” (1992), “Ujaaan Srote Bangladesh” (2003), “Nari Dhormo Ityadi” (2007), “Kalapanir Haatchani – Bilite bangalir Itihash” (2008), “Muktijuddho o tarpor: Ekti nirdoliyo Itihash” (2008), “Rabindranath er nari vabna”, “Naari progotir teen pothikrit”, “Bangla Gaaner Itihash” (2022) etc. He also edited “Vidyasagar Smarakgrantha” (1971) and a three-volume Bengali dictionary, called 'Bibarton mulak Bangla Abhidhan' (2013–2014). For his literary contribution, he has been awarded with Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1982, Prothom Alo Book Award in 2007, IFIC Literary Prize in 2018, and Ekushey Padak for Language and Literature in 2021.

Ghulam Murshid is also known by the pen name Hashan Murshid.
