Amiya Bhusan Majumdar was one of the most noteworthy Bengali authors of 20th Century, renowned for his contribution in modern Bengali prose. He was born on 22 march of 1918 in Cooch Behar district of undivided Bengal. In 1937, he passed Intermediate of Arts and in 1939 Bachelor of Arts with honours in English literature from Victoria College. From his college days, he was an avid reader, describing it as almost “an addiction”, which had a great influence on the construction of his transparent and broadened ideologies. Afterwards, however, due to unavoidable circumstances he was forced to take up a job as a Graduate Clerk in the Cooch Behar Head Post Office to support his family.
Amiya Bhusan’s literary works reflected the different angles of lives of individuals from all sectors of the society with uniform sympathy. His first published writing was ‘The God on Mount Sinai’, a oneact play, serialized in two instalments in the magazine Mandira in 1944. Then two of his short stories, namely “Promilar Biye” published in Purbasha in 1946, and “Nandarani”, published in Chaturanga in 1947, immediately caught the attention of a special strata of readers and critics for the very individual prose style. During 1953-54 “Garh Shrikhand” (in Purbasha) and “Nayantara” (in Chaturanga), two major novels started serialization almost simultaneously. In fifty years thereafter, Amiya Bhushan published 27 novels, 115 short stories, about 50 essays and 6 one-act plays, which were published mostly in little magazines. Major of his other works include “Dukhiyar Kuthi”, Mahishkudar Upakatha”, “Bilash Binoy Bandana”, “Rajnagar”, “Madhu Sadhukhan”, “Friday Island”, “Bibikta”, “Chand Bene”, “Ei Desh”, “Biswa Mittirer prithibi”, “Tasilar Mayor” , “Udbastu”, “Nirbaash”, “New Calcutta”, “Dom Antonio”, “Tragedy-r Sondhane”, “Bhuli Nai”, “Rami Rojokini”, “Oti Birol Projati”, “Kalka Mail '92 - Ek Upanyasher Sandhane”, “Moti Ghosh Park Bhanu Gupto Lane”, “Bindani”, “Kumar Tapadar”, “Makchok Horin” etc. For “Raj Nagar”, he was awarded Bankim Puraskar and Sahitya Akademi Samman in 1986, and Bhagirath Shitya Samman for “Mahishkudar Upakatha” in 1995.
Amiya Bhusan Majumdar passed away on 8th July 2001 in Kolkata.
