Atul Chandra Gupta was one of the prominent intellectuals of 20th century, who was well known for his literary contribution ranging in diverse subjects. He was born on 12th of March, 1984 at the Billaik village of Tangail district of undivided Bengal. After completing his high school education from Rangpur, he arrived at Kolkata and then completed his B.A. in English and Philosophy from Presidency College, and successfully finished his studies of M.A. in Philosophy and B.L. degree from Calcutta University. His professional career started as a teacher at Rangpur National School and then as a professor of Law at Calcutta University from 1918 to 1928; afterwards, he took up legal practice as his main profession, and soon became one of the renowned advocate of his time.
From the very beginning, Atul Chandra was a keen observant and distinctly focused, which was well reflected from his variegated literary contribution written in fluent and lyrical style, discussing about literature, history, education, politics and many other subjects. His first notable work “Siksha o Sabhyata” was a collection of essays on various aspects of education system published in 1927. The magnum opus of his writings was the literary analysis of theory and philosophy for Bengali poetry, published under the title “Kavyajijnasa” (1928). Again, the memoirs of his travel on the rivers of Bengal and Assam were published as “Nodipothe” in 1937. Others of his notable works include “Samaj O Bibaha” (1948) and “Itihaser Mukti” (1957).
Atul Chandra Gupta passed away on 12th of February 1961 in Kolkata at the age of 75 years.
